How to: Pendulum Divination

Nov 17, 2010 By Michele Evans

Over the centuries people have looked to fortune tellers, seers, sooth sayers, and psychics for answers to what the future will bring to them.

Over the centuries people have went to fortune tellers, sooth sayers, psychics, and oracles thinking that they could give insight to their future. The use of the pendulum is the simplest form of the divination arts, which does require some skill, but does not require any “special” gifts. So any one can use one, almost immediately with a pendulum, a steady hand, and some time.

What is a pendulum?

A pendulum is simply a weighted object attracted to a string. Simple, right? Yes! Which one and what type to use is a personal choice. Some start off with a ring attached to a string, others go to a local occult store, and some find a stone with personal meaning and get it attached to a chain to use. The options are quite endless. Some have one, some have a different one for different uses. There are no right answers to how many pendulums to have.

How to use

Before getting into how to use the pendulum, it has to be cleansed. Objects pick up energy from their surroundings and those who come in contact with it. Do not skip this important step. You can cleanse the object by placing it in salt, running water over it, or leaving it out in the sun for a day. If wanting to do a full ritual, the quarters can be called, the pendulum can be passed through the representations of the elements. Its all personal preference.

Now that the pendulum is cleansed, time for the fun part of using it. Go to the table and get comfortable and relaxed. Rest the elbow on the table, to avoid any extra shaking. Get the feel of the pendulum and how it will move. Some of the common movements are a straight line, side to side or front and back, counter or counterclockwise circles, and elliptical motion.

Since most of the questions for a pendulum are yes/no answers, it is wise to simply address the pendulum with saying “show me yes” and observe what the actions happen, steady the pendulum, then say “show me no”, taking note of what the movements are. circles. Steady the pendulum, and say “show me no”, it should swing in the opposite direction. This process may take some time, but take care not to influence the pendulum by slight hand movements. Once comfortable, ask a few questions that the answers are known to get the feel of how the pendulum moves and to see if it corresponds to the directions.

At this point, other questions can be asked, keeping in mind that the faster and more pronounced the movement the more energy it has. General rule of thumb is, only ask the question once. If the pendulum fails to move, or barely moves, stop the pendulum, and ask a new question.

Pendulums and Charts

If you want more information - you might want to use a chart. At this time the pendulum should be about two inches above the chart - or as is comfortable.

If the motion of your pendulum increases - or the circles get large - the energy is increasing and you can expect change linked to the question you were asking. Pursue further questions to get additional information.

Creating a chart could be a fun endeavor, customizing it to specific questions and adding personal touches. Charts can say anything - including the words Yes and No. There is no wrong way to make one, they can have pictures, maps, symbols, or the alphabet, used to spell out words much like a Ouija board and are generally in the shape of a half circle. Always remember - no matter how you use this tool - if the information received becomes overly negative, or if one starts to feel uneasy - STOP!

Ideas for use

You can use it as a simple form of divination. Check chakras, and align them.

To search for an item. To check the energy levels of your magical items. (the stronger the swing/circle the more energy it has.) Just to name a few. Enjoy and happy scrying.
