Magick Tools: The Wand

Should I buy or create my own wand? When casting real spells, you sometimes need a magick wand. While it is convenient to buy a wand, it is important to remember that your wand is an extension of you and by making your own wand you are able to put your energy into it. There is a deeper connection to something you have made rather than something you buy.

So what material do you you use to make a wand?

Some make wands from other materials like plastic, metal, or even bone, but in my opinion, wood gives the best and most natural energy for spell work.

What is the best wood to make your wand?

This depends on you! If you are looking for certain types of power in your wand then you would choose the wood based on the service of the wand. An all purpose wand, you might use Oak, Hazel or Rowan (Mountain Ash). For banishing, use Birch, Elder, or Juniper. If you are looking for divination, perhaps you might use Cherry, Fig, Orange, Pomegranate or Willow. If you are looking for fertility then Hawthorn or Olive will be best. If you are a healer, you might choose Apple, Blackberry, Cedar, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood, or Willow. If you cast love spells then Apple, Cherry, Elm, or Willow are best. Or if your magick is for prosperity you might want Blackberry, Maple or Pine. If you are seeking protection then use Poplar, Ash, Elm or Elder for your wand.

Some pick the wood based on elemental powers like using Oak or Walnut because it has the element of fire, ruled by the sun and best for fire signs (Aries, Leo or Sagittarius). Or if you are a water sign (Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio), you might useApple or Gardenia. Apple is ruled by Venus and gardenia by the Moon. Pine or Cedar are good for the earth signs (Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn). Pine is ruled by Mars and Cedar by Mercury. Finally, if you are an air sign (Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius), then Hazel or Eucalyptus is the best choice.

Or Some other choices are Balsa for psychic awareness, Cedar for healing, purification or protection, Cherry for love, Ebony for protection or magickal energy,Elder for spirituality or protection. Eucalyptus is also good for healing. Maple is good for love and money. Oak is used for strength and health. Pine is good for money, healing or exorcism and Walnut for health. Willow gives psychic awareness and blessing of the moon.

So once you have chosen the wood, you need to determine how long you want your wand to be. Wands can be anywhere from 8 inches up to 1 yard in length. It needs to have a good grip and be comfortable to use. Some say that a good length is from the crook of your elbow to the tip of your middle finger. Another option is to cut it to measure 13 inches; the number 13 is sacred to the Goddess as it represents the 13 lunar cycles in the year. Once you have determined what length to make your wand, it's time to get to work.

Using a saw or ax, remove the branch from the tree. Do not forget to thank the tree for the wood to keep the energy positive. Or you can choose to buy your wood at a home improvement store if you are not able to go traipsing out in the woods in search of the right tree. Now using a knife, remove the bark. Check to make sure that the wood is not rotted, soggy or soft. Take sand paper (heavy grade) and sand the wood until all the nubs and edges are smooth. Use a finer grate until the wood is smooth.

Now you are ready to decorate your wand. You may want to carve an animal head, rune or other magic symbol on to the handle of your wand to help you focus the energy for spell work. Use a pencil to mark your artwork before making your cuts. You may choose to use a wood burning tool to carve your symbols.

Once you have finished carving your symbols, rub mineral oil (add a few drops of essential oil to boost power) on the wood to protect it. This will protect the wood from humidity or becoming too dry and brittle. If you are planning on painting the wood, then do not use the mineral oil because the paint will protect the wood but the mineral oil will destroy the paint.

Once the paint or mineral oil has dried now you can add accessories. You can use leather or silk cords to tie on feathers or wrap animal skins around the handle. You might add a special tip like a pine cone, acorn, or a crystal. Attaching a special tip can be tricky. Using copper wiring or glue to attach your tip. If glue alone does not work, you can wrap a piece of animal skin or fabric smeared with glue so that half is on the item and half on the wand. Using a glue gun, you can attached small gems, crystals, or shells to your wand.
