Making a portable altar ensures that you can keep a piece of your sacred place of worship with you anywhere you go.

Building a Portable Altar

An altar is a personal place of worship. It is your own sacred place or area where you are able to pray to the Gods and Goddesses. It helps you to connect to the earth mother, land sprites and entities. It is often used to help focus energy when spell casting. It can be extremely elaborate in design or very basic and simple. It all depends on the person who is building it. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is as long as it works for you as an individual. An altar is one’s safe zone. The area that is free of negativity.

Most often an alter is a permanent area in or around a home. It is not easily lifted up and carried with you when you go on holidays or extended trips. By building a small, compact version of an alter you can bring a piece of your sacred place with you. It shouldn’t be too large or it will make travelling with it difficult. It should all fit snugly into a small wooden box, yet shouldn’t be crammed in to tightly.

Supplies needed:

These are just some of the most basic supplies you can use. Feel free to change any or all of them to suit your personal preferences.

  • 1 small wooden box
  • 1 small agate slice
  • mini incense sticks
  • 2 to 3 white tea light candles
  • 2 to 4 small crystals of choice
  • a small smudge stick (white sage, cedar, or sweet grass are good choices)
  • a small box or book of matches
  • a piece of natural fiber cloth (velvet, silk or cotton are good choices)
  • a small pouch (for your crystals)

You can either buy a wooden box that is already finished or make your own. If you buy a wooden box that is already finished cleanse it before you use it. Light a smudge stick-white sage or cedar- and wave the smoke over the box until the box is free of unwanted energy or negativity. If you plan on making your own you can buy unfinished wooden boxes at most craft stores. You can stain and decorate it anyway you like. You don’t need to cleanse it, as it will become infused with your positive energy as you make it.

One of your tea light candles will be used as an incense holder. Simply push the wood part of the incense stick into the wax. This is most easily done at the area where the wick is. This will hold your incense stick vertical and make burning it safe.

The agate slice will work as a candle holder. Set your other tea light on top of the agate slice and light it.

When you build your portable altar you will fill it with the supplies that work and feel right for who you are. After you fill it store the altar on your regular altar for at least a full month cycle. This will help to transfer your sacred energies into the box and make it ready for when you need it.
