Want to lose weight?  Get a good night's sleep!
Weight loss is usually linked to changes in diet and exercise. But if you really want to shed those pounds you should also consider altering your sleep patterns, a study claims.

By Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent 6:00PM BST 29 Mar 2011

Scientists have found that you can double your chances of reaching your target weight if you get between six and eight hours sleep a night.

If you have any more, you will become too inactive and if you have any less your stress levels will increase along with cravings for unhealthy food.

The research in Portland, USA, by Kaiser Permanente, a health care consortium, found that people trying to lose at least 10lb were more likely to reach their goal if they had lower stress levels and slept moderately.

Nearly 500 obese adults with an average age of 55 took part in the study.

They were asked to attend 22 counselling sessions, reduce their diet by 500 calories a day and increase the amount of exercise they took to at least three hours a week.

They also had to keep a diary of their habits, including their sleep patterns and stress levels.

After six months, 60 per cent of the participants had lost at least 10lb.

Researchers found that the successful dieters were more likely to... Full Article

Welcoming April with Tarot
by Barbara Moore
Llewellyn Unbound

What card marks the idea of new beginnings better than the Fool? And what a bonus…tomorrow just happens to be April Fool’s Day.

Image001

Our image for today is from the Spirit of the Flowers Tarot. This darling little Fool, as the flower Geranium, also embodies the spirit of spring. In Victorian times, flowers (and even the method of presenting or holding them) were symbolic. Geranium communicated the idea of impatient desire. That’s how many of us are feeling right now…impatiently ready for Spring.

Looking at this image, we see that he is determined to keep moving but his little dog seems to be distracting him.

Is there something that you impatiently desire to do? What is holding you back? What is distracting you? These questions and this image lead to a spread that you might want to try in preparation for Spring. We want to shake off the lingering hibernating energies of Winter. We want to unfurl our limbs. We want to wake up our slumbering enthusiasm.

To do this reading, take the Fool card... Full Article

Sues energy drink maker after finding a dead animal in bottom of the can

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — A Federal Way man has filed a lawsuit against the maker of Monster Energy Drinks. He claims he found a dead mouse at the bottom of his can, and he has the lab work to prove it.

"Anytime anyone talks about monster, I just get that sick feeling in my stomach," says Vitaliy Sulzhik.

It happened March 20, 2010. Sulzhik remembers it like it was yesterday. He went into the Fred Meyer in Des Moines, and bought himself a Monster Energy Drink. When he finished drinking it, he didn't realize another monster would be at the bottom.

"I put it down and I felt it was still heavy. So I backwashed it and all this debris went into my mouth," says the 19 year old. "Then I looked in the can and I saw the tip of the tail and I vomited everywhere."

It was a dead mouse inside the can. His attorney sent the can... Full Article

Deity, Metaphor, and Masks

Readers, please enjoy this guest blog post by Ember Grant, author of Magical Candle Crafting.

As a Neo-Pagan, I’m often asked about gods and goddess. Do I worship a pantheon? If so, which one? This is a tricky question. Basically, I feel that the universe and our natural world represent the divine power, and this is what I honor. But in order to bring deity to a personal level, I really do need to ask myself what I believe about the gods and goddess of my ancestors, or the ones currently worshiped today.

Well, I know what I don’t think about deity. I don’t think there’s one singular ominous being of a particular gender, belonging to one specific religion, floating above us, always watching and judging. And I certainly don’t think “he” has a long robe and flowing white beard and sits on a cloud behind pearly gates.

The religions of the past are fascinating to study; cultures like the Egyptians and Greeks (and many, many others) had sophisticated systems of polytheism. People often say those deities no longer exist, but, if that’s true, it’s only because large groups of people stopped believing in them. Our beliefs make something real.

There are so many religious traditions in the world that it’s futile to label them as right and wrong. It’s more than futile, it’s impossible. Yet our world continues to face wars born out of religious disputes. I often wonder why everyone can’t agree to disagree. Perhaps it’s because some people insist that their way is the only way and everyone else is wrong. They believe it is their duty to convince the rest of the world to join them and they devote their lives to it. Some people are unable to see beyond the metaphor, to the real meaning of the divine, rather than merely a cultural interpretation of it... Full Article

200-pound fish strikes tourist, lands in boat

ISLAMORADA— A spotted eagle ray that made spectacular leaps from the turquoise waters of Islamorada on Friday gave an Illinois family an unforgettable fish tale to take home from their Florida vacation.

The Hausch family was enjoying an eco-tour boat ride on Friday afternoon when the 200-pound spotted eagle ray with a 5.5-foot wing span that they were photographing leaped into their boat and struck Jenny Hausch in the chest, officials said.

"She was not harmed and managed to get out from under it," said Officer Robert Dube of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Division. Hausch was with her husband and three kids when the incident happened.

"She is lucky," Dube said. In 2008, a Michigan woman who was touring the Keys in a boat was also struck by a ray.

Aries & The Power of Being Self-Centered
By Molly Hall

About Astrology

Image001

I've been uncharacteristically self-absorbed today -- maybe it's Venus (in Pisces) about to cross my Ascendant, and all this self-centered Aries energy. I took loads of pictures of myself, some with my dog Lulu. And even looking at the New Moon chart, my driving interest was, "How is this going to affect me?" It's hard for me to admit that, since it doesn't fit with my self-image. And yet, it's freeing, and an expansion, and I know can take me further faster (with Jupiter Aries). After all, Aries is the "Me First" and "I Am!" sign.

By Sunday, there will be six planets in Aries (Sun-Moon, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus-Mars), making it a great time for self-focus, since Aries is the fire energy of vibrant Selfhood. This is a freeing time if you've put your own needs 2nd for whatever reason. It's a time to come back to yourself in its most potent (undiluted) version. If you sense you've been living a shadow version of yourself, now is the time to step out into the light. You can sense more urgently, your unique soul drive, and draw new inspiration from that.

I've always admired the strong sense of Self, of Aries, since it constantly takes them into new experiences. I've got that Cancer Sun sign trait of craving the familiar, and moving indirectly crablike. Water and earth signs can find this boost of cardinal fire helps to be more decisive, overcome inertia, depression. Air signs can be moved out of the doldrums (no air to catch your sails), and be moved forward on a fresh idea. Fire signs find motivation, expansion, and endless enthusiasm... Full Article

Panama City Beach bikini brawler faces felony charge

PANAMA CITY BEACH — The woman whose tirade at a Panama City Beach Burger King became a YouTube sensation is now facing a felony charge.

Assistant State Attorney Greg Wilson filed formal charges Friday morning against Kimesa Smith, 30, of Montgomery, Ala. She was charged with felony criminal mischief with damage of more than $1,000, two counts of misdemeanor battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence.

Smith was caught on a cell phone video as she climbed onto the restaurant’s counter, threw items and struck employees March 19. She damaged one of the restaurant’s $3,800 LED screens and a cash register, authorities said.

“Considering how busy the Panama City Beach Police Department is because of Spring Break,” Wilson said in a news release, “the State Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation by assigning Investigator Ricky Carleton to do follow-up interviews with witnesses and victims, which led to the additional charges.”

The video of Smith’s incident has become an internet sensation. It’s on YouTube under the title “Spring Break Bikini Brawl at Burger King.”

The video shows Smith standing on the counter to shout at a cashier she’d argued with in the drive-through moments earlier. About halfway through the 101-second clip, the dining room explodes with flying napkins, trays, straws, food and what appears to be either a child’s booster seat or a large water bottle.

The fight started when the woman complained about her order, according to a sworn statement from one of the workers.

“While many view this video as amusing, we see it as hard evidence of serious crimes being committed,” State Attorney Glenn Hess said in a prepared statement. “I’m quite certain the employees who were battered and terrorized by Ms. Smith do not find this the least bit amusing.”

The investigation continues and additional charges may be forthcoming.

Need Magickal Herbs? Check Your Cabinets First
By Svehex

Image001

I’ve heard many complaints of how expensive herbs can be, when you can’t grow them yourself. So I thought I’d write a little something on substitutions. You might already have everything you need in your kitchen cabinets.

Let’s start with the Potato. I bet you have some at home. It can be used for image magic, grounding and healing. A Potato can also be used as a poppet. Think how easy it would be to quickly carve a Potato, instead of having to sew a proper poppet.

The Carrot is mostly associated with fertility and lust. Not that surprising when you think about its shape. Almost all roots with phallic shapes have this property. The Carrot was also considered a bane to the most evil of spirits, and was used to repel them.

The properties of Cucumber also include fertility (again the shape) , but also chastity and healing. For a fertility spell, keep a Cucumber in your bedroom, and replace it every seven days.

A Tomato can be used for magic workings concerning protection, prosperity and love. When a Tomato is placed on the windowsill, or any other household entrance it keeps evil from entering. Place a large red Tomato on the mantle to bring prosperity into the home. Replace it every three days.

The Onion has properties like protection, exorcism, healing, money, prophetic dreams and lust etc. Combined with Garlic it’s said to fend off witches, but who’d want to do that? Take a small white Onion, stick it full of black-headed pins, and place it in a window. This will guard your home against evil.

Since the Leek is used as an onion, it too has protective powers and can be used for exorcism, but it also has love as one of its properties.

Garlic is also used for protection and... Full Article

It’s Tracking Your Every Move and You May Not Even Know
By NOAM COHEN

A favorite pastime of Internet users is to share their location: services like Google Latitude can inform friends when you are nearby; another, Foursquare, has turned reporting these updates into a game.

Michael Löwa for The New York Times
Malte Spitz was surprised by how much detail Deutsche Telekom had about his whereabouts.

But as a German Green party politician, Malte Spitz, recently learned, we are already continually being tracked whether we volunteer to be or not. Cellphone companies do not typically divulge how much information they collect, so Mr. Spitz went to court to find out exactly what his cellphone company, Deutsche Telekom, knew about his whereabouts.

The results were astounding. In a six-month period — from Aug 31, 2009, to Feb. 28, 2010, Deutsche Telekom had recorded and saved his longitude and latitude coordinates more than 35,000 times. It traced him from a train on the way to Erlangen at the start through to that last night, when he was home in Berlin.

Mr. Spitz has provided a rare glimpse — an unprecedented one, privacy experts say — of what is being collected as we walk around with our phones. Unlike many online services and Web sites that must send “cookies” to a user’s computer to try to link its traffic to a specific person, cellphone companies simply have to sit back and hit “record.”

“We are all walking around with little tags, and our tag has a phone number associated with it, who we called and what we do with the phone,” said Sarah E. Williams, an expert on graphic information at Columbia University’s architecture school. “We don’t even know we are giving up that data.”

Tracking a customer’s whereabouts is part and parcel of what phone companies do for a living. Every seven seconds or so, the phone company of someone with a working cellphone is determining the nearest tower, so as to most efficiently route calls. And for billing reasons, they track where the call is coming from and how long it has lasted... Full Article

Manners, Etiquette And Astrology
by Satori
ElsaElsa.com » The Astrology Blog

Good manners and etiquette used to be synonymous. Being well-mannered means being socially pleasant. Etiquette is a set of codified rules for behavior. Manners are Venus matters, 2nd house values and 7th house balance. I would say they are primarily Libran but Taurus is also involved. Etiquette is more Saturn-ruled, the 10th house, public, traditional, restrictive and sometimes archaic. Modern, updated etiquette adds Jupiter, expanding the rules.

The attitudes of an individual can be observed in Venus and Saturn related placements, by aspect and by house. They can also be observed in Mars, Mercury and Moon placements as well, which relate to how you act, communicate and feel. Venus-ruled placements, in the 7th house, aspecting Venus or in Libra or Taurus, tend to the pleasing side, good manners. Saturn-ruled placements, in the 10th house, aspecting Saturn or in Capricorn lend an air of the traditional. Adding Jupiter or Uranus into the mix can increase the effect, modernize it or make it shocking. With so many variables in one individual, it’s rarely straightforward. We are complicated beings.

One interesting item of note is... Full Article

Bizarre events leave driverless van on path of disaster
Sequence includes woman leaping from van, van cruising solo, schools on lockdown

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A police chase, a woman jumping out of a moving vehicle, a hazmat situation and more. No, it's not an action movie. It's a Thursday afternoon for local law enforcement.

If you thought you saw a car headed down the Crosstown Expressway without a driver, you weren't imagining it: A woman jumped out of a moving vehicle on the freeway around noon in a bizarre chain of events that left three schools on lockdown.

Here's how it started: Police say they had an officer escorting a man who was driving his suicidal daughter to the hospital.

When they made it to the hospital, the father got out of the van and the daughter jumped behind the wheel and took off.

That chase led them to the Crosstown, where the woman bailed out of the van going 30 or 40 mph. It continued on without a driver down a service road until it burst through a fence at the city's gas department before finally coming to a stop at an air conditioning unit. But the story does not end there.

"As a precaution we brought our hazmat team to take air samples to make sure that there was no danger," said Capt. R.L. Polanco of the Corpus Christi Fire Department.

The air conditioning unit released some freon and ammonia into the air. Three CCISD schools went on lockdown until the air was deemed safe.

Even with all of the brushes with disaster, police say it could have easily been a lot worse... Full Article

Ten things your Tarot Reader may not tell you

by Ginny Hunt

Image001

1.  I don't know whether the reading I will give you will be helpful or not.  I sure hope it is, but even when we have a clear understanding what we are asking and I have a clear understanding of the cards, the cards themselves may not be extremely helpful.  They may tell you what you already know and the reading can feel like a waste of time.

2.  I don't always get psychic information.  Tarot readers are not always psychic just as all psychics are not proficient in tarot.  I will occasionally get an unexpected nugget of information that comes totally out of left field, such as a time or date or other specific detail that I couldn't have known naturally, but in general I don't rely on these because they are so random.

3.  I am not a mind reader.  I cannot read your mind, so if you want to know what the cards say about a certain situation, you have to tell me about that situation.  If you hold back crucial information because you are testing my powers, you may not get important information you need.  This is because the message from the cards is filtered through my own conscious awareness, so if I don't know about it, I'm not going to address it.

4.  I want you to ask questions about your reading.  I prefer my reading clients to be actively engaged in the reading process.  I know sometimes it seems like a straightforward exchange in which you pay for a tarot reading and I deliver it, but a reading isn't like buying a cake at a bakery, it's about you and your life.  It is more akin to ordering a fine suit and having it customized and tailored to you.  I want your input during the entire process.  I love feedback, both positive and negative.

5.  You can't do what I do.  A tarot reader invests a vast amount of time, money, and energy into study of the cards and into honing their reading abilities and techniques.  I am not reciting your reading from a list of card meanings from a reference book.  Certainly anyone can do that.  I also have a knack for this and I am using my talent and gifts in reading your cards.  Everyone can sing, but that doesn't mean everyone should go on American Idol.  There's a reason I get paid for what I do. Even if you do read tarot quite skillfully yourself, I lend objectivity as well as my own unique intuitive insight to your reading that you can't give yourself... Full Article

Adding to the list of potential health hazards, the widespread use of hand-held devices at work has spawned a new condition.

''BlackBerry thumb’’ is the name given to a repetitive strain injury caused by overusing mobile phones to send emails and texts.

The condition is so common that one law firm believes employers can expect a series of lawsuits from staff claiming compensation.

Karen Jackson, a co-founder of the solicitors Roberts Jackson, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, said: “If no one knows about the risks involved, they won’t sue, but more and more people are becoming aware of health hazards in the workplace."

'BlackBerry thumb’ is the overuse of a mobile phone for work purposes and we envisage potential work in this area as more people are using their handsets when they’re on the move, which is leading to repetitive strain injury.

“A lot of people displaying symptoms associated with repetitive strain injury do not realise they are work-related, but the number with symptoms is increasing.”

The firm is increasing its staff numbers to cope with what it believes will be a sharp rise in ''BlackBerry thumb’’ claims.

Traditionally, industrial disease claims have related to asthma, asbestos-related illnesses, dermatitis, allergies and occupational deafness and tinnitus. Another relatively new industrial injury is ''Popcorn lungs’’, or bronchiolitis obliterans, which can strike employees working in popcorn factories.

Some popcorn flavouring contains...

Do you use magical mandrake?

This week on Herbal Fridays, we're looking at mandrake. American Mandrake, also known as hog apple, May apple and duck's foot, is one of those plants with a long and colorful herbal history in the Americas. Historically, it's been used as a medicine in treatments for disorders relating to the liver and bowels, as well as a cathartic. It's important to note that there are two different types of mandrake; American and European mandrake are two similar but botanically unrelated plants.

A number of medieval herbals, such as the Herbarium of Apuleius cite the use of mandrake root as a cure for demonic possession. It's also recommended as a preventative against sorcery. Mandrake became a popular ingredient in magic because the roots tend to bear a resemblance to the human figure - an early example of poppet magic in action.
