'Chupacabra' Actually A Bald Raccoon

Kentucky Scientists Want To Study Animal's Bizarre Hair Loss

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A hairless animal found in Kentucky last month is not the legendary dog-like chupacabra, but instead a bald raccoon.

Two weeks ago, the hairless creature found by Mark Cothern hit the airwaves and spread like wildfire to news organizations around the world.

"It's kind of exploded, and everybody's on Facebook, exchanging pictures," he said. "It's pretty interesting."

The chupacabra has never been verified, but it has mystified millions with sightings in Texas, New Mexico and now Kentucky.

"It is no doubt a hideous creature," wildlife biologist Steve Dobey said of the hairless raccoon. "There's just no way around it. It's not very attractive and without that fur ... that fur absent, it gives it a whole new appearance as to what it is."

Dobey said the skeletal features and general appearance of the animal found by Cothern leads biologists to believe it's a hairless raccoon. The animal was caged in 2007 while it was still living, and now they want to determine why it's hairless.

It's not mange, which has been the case in chupacabra sightings in the West that turn out to be coyotes.

Biologists said there are many reasons a raccoon might lose its hair or be born without it, including disease, shock or a genetic disorder.

Cothern said he's taking the animal in question to a taxidermist to mount it.

"It's kind of been fun, actually," he said. "It's a little mystery in your day."
