Russian Prosecutor Jailed for Destroying 50,000 Motorola Phones

Someone doesn’t like cell phones. A Russian prosecutor has just been jailed for demolishing 50,000 seized Motorola phones. The value of the phones are estimated to be around $1.5 million at the time they were seized. Apparently, the phones were taken in after a claim that they exceeded acceptable radiation emission levels. Now the prosecutor is basically done for the next 15 years.

Cellular News says:

Moscow’s Golovinsky District Court ruled Tuesday that Moscow region prosecutor Dmitry Latyshev, who gave the order to destroy the shipment, had exceeded his authority, Interfax reported.

The former co-owner of Yevroset, Yevgeny Chichvarkin is now living in the UK and fighting an extradition treaty. He has claimed that the seizure of the phones was part of an ongoing campaign to force his company to pay bribes to customs officials.

If Chichvarkin is telling the truth, the drama goes a little deeper than just seizing and destroying phones. We’re talking bribery and extortion, and apparently the co-owner of Yevroset is, well, set on exposing the truth.
