The meaning of the Hermit tarot card explored from a Wiccan perspective. Use the Hermit tarot card in spells, meditations and for Wiccan divination.

The Hermit tarot card is the tenth of the 22 cards of the tarot's major arcana; each card symbolizes major archetypes and life events. The Hermit tarot card is concerned with self-awareness, wisdom and solitude.

Symbolism of the Hermit Tarot Card

The Hermit represents enlightenment, guidance, inner wisdom and spiritual light. He symbolizes genuine progress in spiritual understanding and perspective on the world, as opposed to blindly following any one tradition. The Hermit tarot card represents the inner clarity gained only through experience and real spiritual development.

The Hermit tarot card symbolizes the benefits of isolation and reliance on one’s own wisdom in order to better understanding the world. The appearance of the Hermit tarot card may often indicate that it would be wise to spend time alone to reflect on a situation, of seeking out the advice of an independent spirited, and wise, spiritual master, rather than casting around for advice which may or may not be appropriate.

When the Hermit tarot card manifests its negative aspect, for example when it appears reversed in a divinatory tarot spread, it may signify excessive and inappropriate dependence on an established tradition or religion. It might also symbolize a dislike of being alone or a fear of boredom.

Use in Wiccan Tarot Magic and Spells

The Hermit Tarot card may be used in Wiccan Tarot Magic and Spells when seeking to find one’s own inner wisdom when faced with a conundrum or difficult situation.

A simple way of harnessing the power of the insight and intuition of the Hermit is to carry the card when dealing with a situation which requires steadfast inner wisdom.

The Hermit Tarot Card in Divination

The Hermit appeals to deep aspects of the psyche which may often be masked in everyday life. According to the position of the Hermit in a Tarot spread, he may indicate the appearance of a genuinely wise spiritual teacher, or the need to retreat from the world to achieve one’s own spiritual progress. When reversed an inappropriate seeking of distraction and human company may be indicated. Always seek the potential relationships between neighbouring cards when interpreting a tarot spread that includes the Hermit card.

To develop a deep and instinctive understanding of any tarot card, spend time in mediation and study, using both classic and modern books on the tarot, as well spending time for personal reflection on the meaning of the image.

Wiccan Tarot Divination may be practiced alongside scrying with black mirrors and crystal balls. Each divination technique has its own particular insights and strengths to offer and the combination of the two may be especially powerful in revealing hidden truths.
