There is nothing more important than taking in every aspect of the energy around you to do your spellcasting and rituals. You have to use all six of your senses, touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing, and intuition. You already use your five physical senses in your everyday life on a very basic level, but once you open up your third eye you’ll “see” more that life has to offer through the other five senses. This fact tends to make your intuition one of your most important senses and the one that most people rarely use until the body kicks it in subconsciously to help them though a problem or event in which their better judgment seems to be lacking.

There are many ways to open up this sixth sense. Imagine a multi-tool pocketknife; you know the ones that have the pliers on top and open up to form the handles of the pliers. Inside those handles are other tools, usually a knife, a saw, a file, a can opener, and a screwdriver. We’ll stick with just those five tools for now; see where this is going yet? The pliers are, of course, your intuition. Imagine you’ve never used a multi-tool before and you don’t know how to open it (this may be true for some of you) . You figure out that if you raise the pliers out of the body it unlocks the rest of the tool, and you know the other tools are attached to it. You’ve used them as separate tools before, just never in a multi-tool.

So you’ve got the pliers raised, and hey, using this is just like using an actual set of pliers. There is a central pivoting joint attached to a double-handled grip and teeth at the working end. Yet, you’ve never used a multi-tool before. You know these practical and easily accessible tools are in there. As a matter of fact you know that within this little tool, these individual tools are on hand at any given time. Unless you open the grips and the pliers’ head, you can’t find the simple tools hidden inside. But once you do, oh how easy your life is!

That’s the basic idea: when you open your pliers, or your intuition, your mind, you can experience the same tools. These are the senses but with a little more convenience and versatility. Is it hard to get to them? No. Can it sometimes be a pain to get them out to use them? Sometimes it can. But do you have the power to do so? Absolutely!

If you know how to meditate on the lowest level -- meaning you can calm your mind and body and dissipate the mundane work around you -- then you can do this. However, this is not about meditation, now is it? You’ll have to figure that one out for yourself… for now. Once you achieve this almost state of Zen then here are some exercises to help you become more cognizant of your other senses, and to have a better experience when doing your work.

Let’s start with the most primal of your senses, touch. While in your -- we’ll call it ‘calm state’ --raise your dominant hand and reach forward. That simple. If you are in front of your altar, you may actually touch an object. If not, you will only touch the air. Yes, you will touch the air. Record the feeling you got in your fingertips, your palms, the back of your hands, and your wrists. Don’t analyze; just write what you felt.

So then get back into your calm state again. Make sure no one is in the room for this one. Just calm your mind and listen, just for a moment. What’s the first thing you hear? It’s probably a noise you’ve never heard, or have rarely heard. Come back to the mundane and write that down.
Next, calm state, and then breathe out through your mouth. Keep your mouth closed and breathe in through your nose. Aromas will fill your nostrils. Again make sure no one is in the room. a heightened sense of B.O. is never fun, and if you still smell it then go take a shower and try this exercise again. All joking aside, record your findings.

Next is just the opposite of the last. Get into your calm state, and then breathe out through your nose, and in deep with your mouth. Beforehand it is a good idea to rinse out your mouth. Don’t brush your teeth, just rinse with water. you don’t want any minty flavor or flavor of what you had for lunch yesterday. Record the first thing you taste. You don’t have to be specific. Something like, “bitter and warm” can suffice. Remember, don’t analyze. Your intuition is enhancing this. Don’t fight it.

Last is sight. If you wear glasses to see, then keep them on. After getting into your calm state, turn yourself around. Now open your eyes quickly, look around for just a second, and then close them back again. Everything’s a little wonky, light-soaked and blurry, huh? Besides what is normally there record your sights including any blurs that seemed to move or take shape, any differences in the room that you may have noticed. You basically just took the energy your mind’s eye has been building up from your calm state and dumping back into the world by opening your eyes so quickly. So catch what you can of the fleeing energy. it will reveal some things you may have never known.

We are all one conscious flowing energy stream with Gaia, so when you calm yourself and recognize that, you will connect with all of the other streams of intuition and consciousness… some that may have been in that very place before, or even after, you.

With practice you will find it easier and easier to use these heightened senses with your intuition, so make good use of your mind, and make your spells, and rituals, something to remember. Truly feel, smell, taste, hear, and see the energies around you. Until merry we meet again, blessed be.
