Basil

Basil is known far and wide as a culinary herb, but it also contains some interesting magical properties. In Mediterranean countries, it is strewn on floors to purify a home. It also can bring luck to people moving into a new residence - a gift of a potted basil plant guarantees good fortune. Maud Grieve's Modern Herbal says that the name "basil" may come from the Greek basileus, a king, because 'the smell thereof is so excellent that it is fit for a king's house.' Basil plants are also said to attract scorpions, and in some cultures it was believed that smelling the plant would cause a scorpion to grow in the brain.

In some countries, however, basil is considered something that real men don't eat -- why? Because it's associated with teas that are used to provide relief from painful menstrual periods.

Magically, basil can be used in love magic and in love divination. Scott Cunningham says in his Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs that two basil leaves placed on a live coal will give you an indicator about the state of your relationship: if they burn to ash quickly, the marriage will be harmonious, but if they crackle and hiss, your marriage will be disruptive.

Basil can also be used to guarantee fidelity -- or detect the lack of it. If you suspect your lover has been stepping out, place a fresh basil leave on their hand. If it wilts right away, chances are good they've been spreading the love around. To keep your spouse or partner faithful, sprinkle powdered basil in the bed while they sleep -- especially around the heart -- and they will remain true to you... Full Article

What is a Significator?
A significator is a card that is used in a tarot spread to represent the querent (the person asking the question).  Not all readers use significators. Some don’t use them at all. Some use them only with certain spreads. Some use them in every reading. I suggest trying various methods to see what, if any, work for you. Also, try new methods (or revisit previously discarded methods) every year or so. You never know when something that didn’t work in the past will work in the present. This is one way I keep my reading practice fresh.

How do you select a Significator?
There are so many ways! Here are a few traditional methods. Next time, I’ll share a few modern methods, as well as ways to use significators in your readings.

1. Major Arcana Significator
This one is simple: use the Magician for a male querent and the High Priestess for a female querent.

The downside of this method is that it takes the card selected out of play. A solution? Use a Magician or High Priestess from another deck.

2. Physical Realm Significators
These methods rely on a querent’s physical appearance or birthdate to determine a significator. These are traditional methods and not ones that I favor for various reasons.

Man runs out of gas, buys lottery ticket — wins!
$200,000 winner in scratch-off contest in South Carolina

ABBEVILLE, S.C.  — An Abbeville man is the newest lottery winner in the Upstate.

Lottery officials said the man was on his way to get a haircut, when he ran out of gas.

They said he ended up walking the rest of the way into town and on his way bought a lottery ticket.

The scratch-off ticket ended up being a winner, and the man won $200,000.
Lottery officials said the man bought the ticket at Rosenberg’s Spirits, which won $2,000 for selling the winning ticket.

The man told lottery officials the Cash Blowout winnings will make a great down payment on a farm.

Two top prizes of $200,000 remain in the Cash Blowout game. Odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 440,000.

Approximately 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery is returned to the state in the form of funding for education, prizes, retailer commissions and payment to contractors for goods and services... Full Article

Today, May 2, 2011, is the first ever International Pagan Coming Out Day. Organizers say that they are “working to achieve greater acceptance and equity for Pagans at home, at work, and in every community” by encouraging those who are able and ready to come out of the “broom closet” to do so. They feel that we can reduce stigma by putting a human face on Paganism, provide a voice for those Pagans who cannot yet come out, and basically open a dialog with the mainstream. I don’t know how much national media attention this day will garner since the news of Osama bin Laden’s killing was just announced last night, but it’s an interesting endeavor nonetheless and something that will at least get us Pagans entering into dialog with one another about this issue.

There are myriad opinions on whether we should come out or not, and even as to whether we should appropriate the GLBT language of “coming out” for something that is fundamentally different… and yet, not so different. Some make the argument that coming out as a witch is more dangerous to parents than coming out as GLBT, because of custody issues. Others say that it is hard to live in a society where the mainstream automatically assumes you are like them – whether that means straight or Christian. And that if we speak up when we can, we can avoid more senseless bullying in the future. Furthermore, it appears the reason it is “easier” to be GLBT these days than 20 years ago (in terms of employment, child custody, etc.) is precisely because they took the issue head-on and brought it out into the light for people to discuss. And yet they still face great challenges for equality in the US and elsewhere... Full Article

NYC couple who split house with wall get divorce

(NEW YORK) -- A feuding New York City couple who built a wall through the house that neither one would give up has finally been granted a divorce.

Simon and Chana Taub had been living in their brownstone separated by the wall that a judge ordered built since both Taubs refused to move.

New York state doesn't allow the speedy dissolution of a marriage without proof that one spouse is at fault, and neither of the Taubs would admit to fault.

The couple filed for divorce in 2005, but a jury rejected it.
