Shame on You: Pirated Android App Really Shameware

A pirated version of an Android app is actually a Trojan that "shames" someone who installs it by sending an SMS message to all his contacts telling them of his piracy.

The original app is called Walk and Text, and costs $2.10 in the Android Market. The app uses the camera on the back of a smartphone to show a user a visual of his upcoming surroundings, which will supposedly prevent the user from running into the street or across a set of train tracks.

[Of course, since many tend to look down as they text, it's also possible they will see only the ground, unless they retrain themselves to hold the phone perpendicular to the ground as they walk. For us, that seems really hard to do.]

The pirated version is available from unofficial Android app markets, and once installed and redirects the pirate to the legitimate app in the Android Market, while also sending the following SMS message to the phone's entire contact list:

"Hey, just downlaoded [sic] a pirated app off the internet, Walk and Text for Android. Im stupid and cheap, it costed [sic] only 1 buck. Don't steal like I did!"

Finally, a message pops up on the phone's screen:

"We really hope you learned something from this. Check your phone bill ;) Oh and dont forget to buy the App from the Market."

Security firm Avast took a look at the pirated app, and made some conclusions that resulted in a huge blow-up in the comments section, including threats of a lawsuit. That contentiousness came from Avast's original post, which determined that data from the pirated app was sent to a URL owned by Georgi Tanmazov, CEO of Incorporate Apps, the developer of a number of Android apps including the legitimate "Walk and Text" app.

Southwest grounds planes after roof rips open on Phoenix flight

Southwest Airlines will ground 79 of its Boeing 737 planes for inspection after the roof ripped open on one of its flights, the company said this morning.

"The safety of our Customers and Employees is our primary concern, and we are grateful there were no serious injuries," said Mike Van de Ven, Southwest's executive vice president and chief operating officer, in a statement.

Southwest expects to cancel about 300 flights today nationwide. Customers should check the status of their flight online before heading to the airport, said Southwest spokesperson Brandy King.

It is unclear how long the inspections will take, she said.

So far, eight flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport -- six departures and two arrivals -- were affected by the cancellations, according to an airport spokesman.

Southwest Flight 812 from Phoenix to Sacramento made an emergency landing in Yuma after the roof ripped open Friday, passengers said.

The flight left Sky Harbor Airport around 3:25 p.m. and landed safely at Yuma Marine Corps. Air Station at 4:07 p.m., said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were 118 passengers and five Phoenix-based crew members on board Flight 812. A flight attendant and one passenger received minor injuries, according to a Southwest Airlines statement. All passengers will receive a full refund along with an apology and two complimentary roundtrip passes on Southwest for future flights, the company said... Full Article

This week on Herbal Magick, we're looking at apple blossoms. For the ancients, the apple was considered a symbol of immortality. Interestingly, it's also seen as a food for the dead, which is why Samhain is sometimes referred to as the Feast of Apples. In Celtic myth, an apple branch bearing grown fruit, flowers, and unopened bud was a magical key to the land of the Underworld. It's also a symbol of the harvest, and is frequently found on altars during Mabon celebrations.

In the English ballad "Thomas the Rhymer," young Thomas is cautioned against eating the Fairy Queen's apples, because to eat the food of the dead would prevent him from ever returning to the land of the living. This story reminds us that apples, and their blossoms, are associated with the realm of the Fae.

The apple is often found as a component in love magic, and the blossoms may be added to incenses and brews. In traditional folklore, apples are used as part of love divination -- peel the apple in a continuous length, and when the first strip of peel falls off, it will form the initial of the person you are to marry. Cut an apple in half and count the seeds -- an even number means marriage is coming, an uneven number indicates that you'll remain single for a while.

Forger shows up in court with phony doctor note

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A California woman facing nearly five years in prison for forging drug prescriptions showed up for sentencing with a phony doctor's note seeking a delay in the proceedings.

Michelle Elaine Astumian was free on $45,000 bail and pleaded no contest in January to felony counts of forgery and using a fraudulent check.

The 41-year-old woman arrived Monday for sentencing in a San Luis Obispo County courtroom and presented a note with a doctor's signature asking for a postponement.

Prosecutor Dave Pomeroy called the doctor, who said the note is a forgery.

The judge immediately ordered Astumian into custody and she collapsed to the floor. An ambulance took her to a hospital.

Pomeroy told the San Luis Obispo County Tribune that Astumian will be sentenced later, but he doesn't know when... Full Article

A few mornings ago I received a phone call from a friend on the opposite side of the country. Alay’nya started out as a hard-driving scientific researcher. We met at a psychic fair in San Diego where she came and received a Tarot reading from me. Although we’ve rarely seen each other in person, we have kept in touch.

Alay’nya has gone through enormous changes. Today she is a professional belly dancer, teacher, and more. You can learn about who she is and what she’s teaching and doing by going to her website.

We talked about a new book she’s completing. We also talked about how she’s setting up classes combing spirituality with dance in a highly structured format.

Although there are some special forms of belly dance for men (such as in the image shown), most people doing belly dance are women. I pointed out to Alay’nya that many women I know personally or know of, who would be interested in combining the physical (dance) and mental (spirituality), do not like “highly structured” formats. Some consider such structure and hierarchy to be patriarchal, regressive, and antithetical to their spiritual progress.

Alay’nya said that although this may be true in some areas, in other areas this such as where she teaches, this is not true and that women there are looking for the structure. Still, I suggested that she might consider adding something about the nature of her work and how the structure of what she is doing integrates mental and physical, body and mind.

Different people have different needs and because of their backgrounds may see things in different ways. In fact our backgrounds and personal history build up the way we see the world. They make up our “maps” of reality. But as we say in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), “The map is not the territory.”

Weight loss is usually linked to changes in diet and exercise. But if you really want to shed those pounds you should also consider altering your sleep patterns, a study claims.

Scientists have found that you can double your chances of reaching your target weight if you get between six and eight hours sleep a night.

If you have any more, you will become too inactive and if you have any less your stress levels will increase along with cravings for unhealthy food.

The research in Portland, USA, by Kaiser Permanente, a health care consortium, found that people trying to lose at least 10lb were more likely to reach their goal if they had lower stress levels and slept moderately.

Nearly 500 obese adults with an average age of 55 took part in the study.

They were asked to attend 22 counselling sessions, reduce their diet by 500 calories a day and increase the amount of exercise they took to at least three hours a week.

They also had to keep a diary of their habits, including their sleep patterns and stress levels.

After six months, 60 per cent of the participants had lost at least 10lb.
