Researchers say they actually found more fecal bacteria on grocery cart handles than you would typically find in a bathroom.

WTSP-TV, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla.

A University of Arizona researcher says you may want to grab one of those disinfectant wipes right before you grab a grocery cart.

Professor Charles Gerba, the lead researcher, swabbed the handles of 85 carts in four states for bacterial contamination.

Gerba says 72% of the carts had a positive marker for fecal bacteria. When they examined some of the samples, they found Escherichia coli, also known as E. coli, on half of them.

Researchers say they actually found more fecal bacteria on grocery cart handles than you would typically find in a bathroom, mainly because bathrooms are disinfected more often than shopping carts...

Warlock isn’t a dirty Word (pt. 3)

by Rowan Pendragon

Now that we have established some of the origins of the word warlock, the one that remains in question is the popular Anglo-Saxon origin and its definition as an “oath-breaker” or “traitor”.  According to the Oxford English Dictionary warlock comes for an Old English word that began to be used around 600 CE.  This has been suggested to have started with the writing of histories by the church monks.  As has been the suggestion in other similar situations, it’s possible that there were misunderstandings and issues with translation of certain words from one language to another causing meanings to be confused.  It’s even been suggested that before the term warlock started to be used that a time more akin to wizard was used in it’s place.

And let’s also not forget the idea of history being written by the victors and the fact that the the church was coming into a special place of power in a time where church law was the law of the land.  So as we have seen in other places when those in charge write the history books, in this instance the church, they have a say in the way the information was written and presented.  This is where we start to see warlock as meaning “oath-breaker” and “traitor” really come into use.

First, it’s important to keep in mind the time this was happening and the context in which the word was used.  At this time all a man had was his word.  Your word was gold, it was your bond.  To break an oath, to break a bond, was something that cast a huge blight on a person and could cause them to be ostracized from their communities.  However, when the church was using the term warlock they were using it to refer mainly to the breaking of a man’s oath to God.  We can see the impact of this most clearly through the famous Malleus Maleficarum, the Hammer of the Witches, the famous witch hunters manual written by Heinrich Kramer who was an inquisitor for the church...

UPPER DARBY, Pa. — A pizzeria owner with mice problems he blamed on competitors tried to sabotage two rival shops by dumping mice in them Monday, authorities in suburban Philadelphia said.

Upper Darby police said a man walked into Verona Pizza on Monday afternoon and asked to use the bathroom. After he left, the owner said he found footprints on the toilet and noticed that the drop ceiling had been disturbed, and he found a bag tucked up above.

The owner turned the bag over to two police officers who happened to be eating lunch there, and they found three white mice inside, police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

Police say the man then walked across the street to Uncle Nick's Pizza and dumped another bag into a trash can inside the establishment, and police found five live mice and one dead one inside.

"We have never had anything like this where mice have been used as an instrument of crime," Chitwood said.

"This is food terrorism by mice."...

In a book called, the artist inside, Tom Hackett laments our being cut off from our own dreaming states of consciousness. He writes, "Without it we cannot see pattern, or connection, or our deep relationship to the world. We become deaf to the song of our soul. We begin to live out of balance."

Some cultures have shamans that dwell in the dreamtime, and act as interpreter. I'm in a study group where we've been sharing our dreams. Too often, though, we're holding all that. This holding and lack of meaning, I believe, is a source of a lot of pain, and makes us vulnerable to manipulation. Life feels like a swampy mess, or just chaotic. As Hackett writes, "No one helps us re-imagine the world."

At the New Moon in Pisces, this Friday, the dreamtime is...

Bank robber hires getaway cab
Suspect takes taxi to branch, asks cabby to wait, police say

ThePittsburghChannel.Com

PITTSBURGH  — A PNC Bank branch was robbed in the North Oakland community and the robber hired a taxi as the getaway car, according to Pittsburgh police.
To the book of faces!

Channel 4 Action News' Keith Jones reported that the bank at 4612 Forbes Ave. was robbed around 3 p.m. Monday.

The robber arrived at the bank in a Yellow Cab and asked the driver to wait while he went inside and then give him a ride when he came out, police said.
While inside the bank, the man handed a note to a teller that said he had a gun and wanted money, police said. The teller handed him an undisclosed amount of money, and he left and got back into the cab, police said.

With the cabby unaware of what had just happened, a red dye pack stained some of the stolen money inside the taxi near the Carnegie Mellon University campus a few blocks away, police said.

Police said the robber told the cab driver to stop, and he got out with some of the money and boarded a Port Authority bus, which is where officers used a Taser on him and took him into custody.

The robbery suspect has not been identified yet.

What do you do with Lavender?

This week on Herbal Fridays, we're looking at Lavender. It's one of those plants which many of us like to grow in pots and gardens, but it can also be found growing wild, if you know where to look. It was used by the ancients in perfuming bathwater, and for strewing on the floors of temples and houses. It was cultivated in England for the first time around 1560, and is mentioned in the writings of William Shakespeare.

Magically speaking, lavender is often associated with love spells, as well as for workings to bring calmness and peace. If you've done any reading about aromatherapy, for instance, you've probably put lavender in your bathwater or under your pillow to help you sleep and bring calming dreams. Lavender is connected to the element of Air, and it works beautifully in smudging and cleansing rituals...

While it might make sense in terms of trying to stem the Middle Eastern unrest, it really makes no sense in real-world terms. In addition, the last sentence in the article should have clued folks in that this was just a parody: (Sunday Humor article at Dawnwires.com are meant to humor our readers. They may or may not be the truth).

The parody that claimed dozens of newspapers and blogs in the Middle East was posted at DawnWires on Sunday, Feb. 27. The article suggested that King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia was planning to buy Facebook, for $150 billion, to quell the unrest in the Middle East.

The initial paragraph of the spoof said...
