Brazil firefighters find alligator behind couch

SAO PAULO (AP) - Firefighters say they have removed a 5-foot-long alligator who was hiding behind a couch after floodwaters washed it into a home in northern Brazil.

Capt. Luiz Claudio Farias of the Parauapebas city fire department says that when the floodwaters receded on Tuesday, a woman saw her 3-year-old son petting something behind the couch. It was an alligator.

He says "she snatched the boy away and called" firefighters.

Farias said Wednesday the alligator was apparently well fed. "If he was hungry he could have seriously hurt or even killed the boy."

The alligator was taken to an environmentally protected area near the city and released into a river.

Some of the most advanced work and theories when it comes to magick are currently appearing in blogs on the web. Because much of this is “cutting edge,” there are going to be disagreements. As long as these are arguments based on logic (a series of premises or ideas that lead to a conclusion) as opposed to simple personal attacks (“You’re wrong and your mother dresses you funny”), this is a good thing. People present their arguments, the logic goes back and forth, and people reading the information can come to their own conclusions.

Recently there has been a spate of posts debating the value and even the reality of what is commonly called “magickal energy” and working with that energy. One of the earliest comments that started this “bloghaha” is in this post (WARNING: contains adult language and may not be safe for work) by Frater A.I.T. His basic idea is stated in his headline, that if your personal practice doesn’t include energy work, you’re not doing a good job.

Rufus Opus, in his blog post here (again, watch out for the language!), correctly points out that classic books such as Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult [Philosophy], the famous Renaissance grimoires, the Corpus Hermeticum, and many others do not have instructions on energy work or even visualization. Frater A.I.T. responds in a comment that in these books energy work is mentioned, but it is called “prayer.”...

Warlock isn’t a dirty Word (pt. 1)

This past Friday evening on the Travel Channel’s paranormal show Ghost Adventures the team took to the streets of Salem, MA to do some investigations at the Witch House and the Lyceum restaurant.  After the show aired it was interesting to me, though not entirely a surprise, that the thing that had people talking wasn’t the investigations or the things that were going on with the team from the show, but the use of the term warlock.

Here is a clip from the show which featured Salem Witch Kelly Spangler and Christian Day, another Salem Witch who has been working to reclaim the term Warlock for the male magickal practitioner.

I really wasn’t surprised by the reactions from various parts of the magickal and Pagan community.  Since I’m on the west coast I didn’t see it until three hours after people back east did so before I had a chance to even see it I was seeing the comments and the debates on Facebook about the issue of using of the term warlock.  It also didn’t surprise me to hear people making other

Christhan Day, owner of Hex and Omen in Salem, MA is also responsible for one of the largest annual festivals in the city, the Festival of the Dead.

derogatory comments about both Christian and Kelly, mostly because you kind of expect that when someone who is a Witch or involved in magick and the occult comes onto a television show and demonstrates their practices.  We saw the same thing with Fiona Horne when she was on Mad, Mad House and when she did her appearance on The Tyra Banks Show.  No matter who you are or what you do if you have the confidence in yourself and what you do to go on television and speak your truth and demonstrate your abilities, you’re bound to catch some flack, often from those who are either jealous or too scared to do it themselves.

But I digress…back to talking about warlocks.

I saw something the other day that still has me scratching my…head. Elliott and I were out killing time by running errands, when we pulled into the parking lot of Target. Parked next to us was a Jeep Cherokee. It was nothing out of the ordinary in a suburban shopping mall, with the exception of one…hmm, two things. Hanging from the hitch and dangling below the bumper, was a set of balls. Bull’s balls. In our household, we refer to them as cohones.

I’ve seen these charming examples of cattle testicles before. Usually hanging from a the back of a really big, diesel pickup truck, splattered with so much dirt and dust the actual color of the vehicle is indecipherable. This particular Cherokee was clean, but, it wasn’t the actual nuts themselves that puzzled me, it was their color. They were blue.

If I had been by myself, the presence of the cohones azul would have sparked an interest and then been forgotten, but I wasn’t by myself. Immediately, a question and answer session started that I wasn’t so sure I should have with my 12-year-old daughter...
