Hollywood fame beckons for cross-eyed opossum

Heidi, the cross-eyed opossum, has received an offer to appear at this year's Oscars.

The American television network NBC have asked the famous marsupial to co-host the biggest award ceremony in Hollywood.

To save the opposum from distress, it is thought her appearance would be via video link.

Heidi shot to prominence after being unveiled by Leipzig zoo last December and she currently has over 300,000 fans on her Facebook page.

The zoo believes the marsupial's eye problem may be to do with her diet before she was abandoned, or because she is overweight, leading to fat deposits behind her eyes.

Player dunks himself through basketball hoop

A springy basketball player's stunt during a break in an NBA match ended up more spectacular than he intended.

Nick Corrales was part of a team of players providing entertainment for the crowd during a time out at a game between the Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Bobcats on Jan 26.

The men took turns bouncing off a trampoline before slamming balls into a hoop, but Corrales launched himself so high in the air that he landed right in the hoop, still clutching the ball, and slid on down to the crash mat below.

His spectacular feat was captured on camera by a member of the audience and posted online.

Dozens of police break up brawl at N.C. church

FLETCHER, N.C. — Authorities say a dispute over leadership at a church in western North Carolina turned from angry words to fistfights.

About 30 police officers from five agencies were called to break up fights Sunday at Greater New Zion Baptist Church in Fletcher, about 94 miles west of Charlotte.

Henderson County Sheriff's Capt. Jerry Rice says the brawl is under investigation and no one appears to have been seriously hurt.

Rice says there were about 75 people at the church when police arrived, but not all of them were scuffling.

Church members are divided over the recent ouster of the Rev. LeVonia Ray as pastor of the church. The fighting apparently began over whether a vote should be held to reinstate him.

No charges have been filed.

How accurate is the groundhog at predicting weather?

With cloudy skies and freezing rain in the forecast for western Pennsylvania on Wednesday morning, it's unlikely that famed groundhog Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow when he pops out of his burrow.

Will that mean that this brutal winter of 2010-11 is over? After all, so the legend goes, if the furry rodent doesn't see his shadow, that means an early spring.

Um, not so.

Based on an analysis of recent weather data, "there is no predictive skill for the groundhog during the most recent years of the analysis," according to the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

The center found that since 1988, the groundhog was "right" 10 times and "wrong" 13 times. In other words, only 10 times did the national average temperature for the remainder of February match what would be expected based on what the groundhog had predicted.

Since 1887, the groundhog has seen his shadow 99 times, and not seen it 15 times to predict an early spring. (There was no record nine times in the late 19th century.)

According to folklore, if it's cloudy when the groundhog emerges from its burrow on Feb. 2, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If however, it's a sunny day, the groundhog will supposedly "see its shadow" and retreat back into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.

Groundhog Day has its origins in an ancient celebration of Candlemas, a point midway between the winter solstice and the pring equinox, according to the climate center. Superstition has it that fair weather was seen as a prediction of a stormy and cold second half to winter, as noted in this Old English saying:

"If Candlemas be fair and bright,

Winter has another flight.

If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,

Winter will not come again."
